APPG

Meeting 21st November 2002

A meeting of the FAPPG took place at the House of Commons on Thursday 21st November 2002 and was chaired by Jane Griffiths MP for Reading East.  A number of delegates attended the meeting and we were very pleased to welcome Dr. Nick Palmer, MP for Broxtowe, previous FAPPG Secretary, to the meeting.
There was a welcome and introduction by Jane and Nick gave background information on discussions that had taken place in previous meetings and the goals that we were hoping to achieve through the FAPPG.

There was a general discussion on what needs to be done to raise awareness and treatment of fibromyalgia and the steps needed to influence medical teams who are working on fibromyalgia research.  The Medical Research Council (MRC) is willing to fund research on fibromyalgia and will take advice from the Medical Advisory Board (MAB).  The task, therefore, is to find who is conducting research and/or funding and make recommendations to the MRC.  The APPG will then have an influence on the research into fibromyalgia.  We also need to ensure that GPs are better informed on the symptoms and treatment of fibromyalgia as the illness is often misdiagnosed or ignored.

Jane closed the meeting by saying that she had learned much more about fibromyalgia and said that many MPs are interested in the work of the FAPPG.  Check to see if your MP is on the list of APPG members.
